Synopsis
During the winter of 1956 this writer was part of a primary school excursion to a Coca-Cola factory in Dawson St, Brunswick. We travelled by bus and at one stage I recall looking to my right from Heidelberg Rd and noticing a sports ground with a sign stating something along the lines of `Northcote plays at home this Saturday’. I concluded that this must be the home of the Northcote club, which was not performing too well in the Victorian Football Association, and although I did not get a close look I could at least say that I had seen the Northcote ground. No doubt the tour of Coca-Cola was instructive – we had to write an essay regarding the experience – but I cannot remember any details or anything interesting. The one aspect of the outing that remains clearly in my memory was seeing for the first time the Westgarth St Oval, albeit from the Heidelberg Rd side rather than the Westgarth St aspect.
